News Archive - Field Day Shows Amateur Radio in Action - June 23-24
On the weekend of June 23 and 24, the East Greenbush Amateur Radio Association will participate in Field Day, an annual event that allows “hams” across the nation to participate in a public demonstration of their emergency communication skills. We invite you to stop by to see our operations and learn more about the many public services that area amateurs provide to our community.
This year's Field Day activities are particularly important as preparations begin for another potentially deadly hurricane season. In the aftermath of the storm that hit Puerto Rico, Amateur Radio was the only form of reliable communication on the island and to the U.S. mainland. Immediately after the hurricane, fifty volunteer Amateur Radio operators were flown to Puerto Rico to establish radio contact points throughout the island.
This year, Field Day activities will begin at 2 pm on Saturday, June 23 and continue for 24 hours until 2 pm Sunday, June 24. Our operations will be based at the Masonic Temple, 701 Columbia Turnpike in East Greenbush.
Field Day has taken place annually since 1933 and involves tens of thousands of amateur radio operators across the United States and Canada. It provides reliable communications that are independent of traditional networks, including cell service, Internet and landlines.
We thank you for your interest in amateur radio and hope that you can join us to learn more during our Field Day operations.
